whitewashing or mortaring washing brick home

my husband and i just seen a home redone over brick that we love. at first we thought it was stucco but it was done right on top of the brick. some parts look plastered while over parts you can see the brick underline. we would love to do ourselves but do not know what it is called or what products are involed. any help will be appreciated. thanks
