Stucco Applying Tips

We will once more remind you that stucco should be applied by a professional as the quality and age of your exterior wall finish is directly dependant on the right appliance of stucco. In any case, we will give you some stucco applying tips to keep in mind in case you need to do smaller repair work on your walls (maybe you can even advise your professional mason then?)

- The key to applying stucco is cleaning the surface. The best way to do this is use light pressure washing method.

- cover the ground with sand, foil or other material to keep the ground from being damaged by the mortar that may drop off the walls or tools.

- do not mix more mortar than needed as it hardens soon and will go to waste if not applied quickly especially in case of hot weather.

- do not allow the stucco to dry too soon as it may cause it to crack. Keep it damp so that it would dry in about 48 hours.

- keep in mind that the temperature is very important when applying stucco – do not start the process when the temperature outside is less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit or when frost is predicted!

i wish to build my own exposed aggregate columns for an interior project and was wondering what is better ; mixing in the finish coat the limestone chips and then washing the surface or pressing them into the finish coat?

Question I recently refaced the mantle facade I ran a 2/4 stick frame construction over the existing face and applied pywood over the stick to finish it. I applied a high strength stucco over and ran it smooth, then painted it. Since then I've been concerned I should have used some lath to keep it secure. But its been almost 2 years and nothing has fallen off. Do you think it will continue to be ok.?

Gary, yes you should hace used diamond extruded lath, or even paper with "chicken wire" over the paper. applying mortar directly to wood may hold but wood can flex, and expand and contract due to temp and moisture.
Best bet is if it "aint" broke then leave it alone, but your application may not have the longivity. Who knows 30 years from now it may still be ok

Can you recommend a product that I can use to affix a resin applique outdoors on my stucco house that will hold and withstand weather? Thank you.
